Our Missionaries

Matt and Louise George

Matt & Louise George

Matt and Louise George are missionaries to Portugal that we as a church have decided to support through European Christian Missions (ECM). They are both Sydney Missionary and Bible College (SMBC) graduates and have both held lifelong interests in languages and other cultures. Late in 2003 Matt and Louise shared with us at a Missions service and several weeks later the Missions Team made the decision to allocate a portion of our Missions budget to supporting them.

The Georges would value your prayer support and any financial support you can give them. For more information on how to support the Georges, see the Missions Board (at the back of the church building) or see any members of the Missions Team. Alternatively, you can email Beck for any prayer points and news updates that don't make it to the missions or news pages of this website.

Some facts about Portugal:

  • Over 90% of the population are nominally Roman Catholic
  • The church suffers from problems such as meaningless ritualism, idolatry, superstition and perceived irrelevance.
  • Only 1% of the population align themselves with evangelical denominations, which struggle to reach out to the community, lack trained leaders and are afflicted by an inward looking "fortress mentality."
  • The cults, particularly Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons, are almost as numerous as evangelicals.
  • Rising living standards since EU membership cause people to disregard the Christian faith
  • People seek meaning and fulfilment in things such as materialism, a career, sport, new age religion, the occult, drugs and alcohol.
